Ærø from West to East

Ærø, the island where my grandmother was born and raised, has got a special place in my heart. But it could become your island as well.

Ærø, the jewel of the South Funen waters awaits you. Once there you understand why dozens of couples from all over Europe choose this island for their wedding ceremony. The "Ærøers" welcome you with open arms, and it's hard not to fall in love with the place. From Skjoldnæs Lighthouse in the West to the town of Marstal in the East is only 30 kilometres, and each one of them is a delight to one's eye and balm to one's soul.

Let me tell you about the island that was once divided in two and let me show you the hilly landscapes. Let me take you to the cove of Vitsø, to the guesthouse in Vindeballe, to the manor Søbygård, to the peculiar murals in the church of Bregninge, the second longest village in Denmark and to the picturesque cliffs at Voderup.

I also wish to show you some of Ærø's monuments from the past such as the banks of Søby and the castle mounds of the church of St. Albert, and I wish to tell you about the silver hoard from the Viking Age. And last but not least I would like to take you to the towns of Marstal and Ærøskøbing, the one with a special atmosphere of sailors' and shipmasters' houses, the other with its idyl beyond comparison of old houses, cobbled stones and restaurants.
