Sometimes we can even tell from their appearance whether the deceased was a man or a woman.<\/p><p>Among other things I tell you about these people&rsquo;s culture and rituals relating to death. We know more and more about it from archaeology, while some intriguing light is also cast by Viking poetry and later sagas.<\/p><p>Of particular interest are the boat-shaped Viking cremation graves, outlined with stones so as to suggest the form of a ship.<\/p><p>From the top of the hill we also enjoy a great view over the Limfjord, the long and intricate waterway which has been of major significance for the region since prehistory.<\/p><p>Many of the finds are displayed in the Lindholm H&oslash;je Museum at the foot of the hill, which we also visit. Here you see exciting presentations of the historical context and the conditions of life for the local community before and during the Viking Age.<\/p><p>A village also existed nearby as long as the burial site was in use, and there are traces of houses close to the graves. The present owner is count Michael who lives at the castle and we are therefore visiting his private home.<\/p><p>Egeskov castle was built to protect the family in times of unrest such as during &quot;the Feud of the Counts&quot; and during the Reformation.<\/p><p>From the outside we can see many defence mechanisms that are built into the walls and inside the castle we can see even more.<\/p><p>You will learn about the barrier mechanisms, the crooked stairs, and how the residents could survive and succesfully resist a long siege as well as show you numerous more details which we can see on the outside as well as inside the castle.<\/p><p>Inside the castle there are some very good stories to tell about the hunting room, such as extraordinary details about trophies and furniture and of course there are nice photos of the family that Count Michael and his wife enjoy sharing with us.<\/p><p>In the Yellow Room a large open fireplace underscores the &quot;hygge&quot; factor and cosiness, and good stories about how previous generations were entertained during banquets and in the evening. The tower holds more surprising details and the same goes for the Great Hall with the black armour which count Michael had made for himself, and which he actually wears occasionally.<\/p><p>Hear the story about the huge tapestry on the wall, learn about the rooms we pass en route to the Hunting Gallery. We&#39;ll admire trophies, guest rooms and you are in for a surprise when you hear the story about the young lady Riborg who has a room named after her in memory of her cruel destiny.<\/p><p>You will also see the amazing toy collection up in the attick.<\/p><p>On a guided tour of Egeskov you will hear all the good stories of past and present. But you can see many of the other castles. Our royal castles are hundreds of years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Copenhagen, you can visit Rosenborg Castle, where the crown jewels are on display. Rosenborg Castle, built by King Christian IV, is a beautiful building with great interior. However, it has been many, many years since the castle has been used as a royal residence. The last time was when the English attacked Copenhagen in 1801. Today, Rosenborg Castle is one of the castles in the Royal Danish Collection. The Royal Danish Collection consists of Rosenborg Castle and the Amalienborg Museum in Christian VIII's Palace in Copenhagen and Koldinghus in Kolding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other castles where our guides also love telling the stories and guide you are Frederiksborg Castle, Fredensborg Castle, Kronborg or S\u00f8nderborg Castle to name just a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manor Houses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At many of Denmark's beautiful manor houses, you can get a guided tour and experience the history of the place up close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Denmark has numerous beautiful manor houses spread around the country both in Jutland, Zealand and Funen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funen is probably the region in Denmark with the most manor houses. It is said that the credit rating is high. This means that the soil on Funen is particularly fertile and suitable for growing crops. Back in the days, this meant that each manor house on Funen could manage with fewer hectares than manor houses elsewhere in Denmark.
