The Catholic minority in Copenhagen: Nørrebro and Brønshøj

On a lovely guided walk through Copenhagen, I will tell you the history of how the Catholic church tried to return to Denmark shortly after the Reformation, and how today it is a well-established minority in Copenhagen. We will look at Copenhagen minority history starting from the constitutional religious freedom up to today's versatile Denmark.

The guided tour begins at The Sacrament Church, Nørrebrogade 27C, where we will meet, and it ends at Saint Antoni Church in Brønshøj after a short bus ride. On the tour we will stop at the closed Saint Joseph's Hospital in Griffenfeldsgade, the former country house Solitude at Kapelvej, the cemetery Assistens Kirkegård and lastly Saint Antoni Church.

During the tour I will tell you about the history of the individual stops. This includes the debate of the time between Lutherans and Catholics in the printed media, the role of the Catholic hospitals in the Danish health system and the Catholic mission in Denmark. In addition to this I will tell you about selected persons and buildings, which have been important for the Catholic mission in Denmark, for example the architect of the art museum Louisianna, Wilhelm Wohlert, who created the present Saint Antoni Church as well as other significant people of Danish Catholic minority history before and after the Reformation.
