Rønne City Walk, Ceramics and Medieval History
Bornholm has been called the island of ceramics, and nowhere in Rønne is that heritage more alive than at Hjorths Fabrik. This tour threads the ceramic tradition through the heart of the old town, with Hjorths as its undisputed centrepiece.
The heart of the tour, on Krystalgade 5. Hjorths Fabrik is one of the most remarkable small museums in Denmark - a 19th-century stoneware factory that is still actually working. Founded in 1859, the building and its machinery have barely changed, and the whole place has an extraordinary living quality. The guide will explain every stage of the ceramic-making process in detail - from raw clay to fired glaze.
What makes it truly special is that you can stop and talk to the potters and artists as they work, watching the same techniques used here for over 160 years. The adjoining shop sells pieces made on the premises - worth a browse even if you don't buy.
Other sites include Erichsens Gaard just around the corner on the charming street Laksegade. This beautifully preserved 18th-century merchant's house gives the ceramic story some social context - in the provincial setting in which Bornholm's craft economy developed.
