Haderslev: History, People and Places of Remembrance

Join a guided walk through Haderslev's old streets, where historic houses, churches and memorials tell the story of the town’s past. Along the way, you will hear about the people, events and many wars that have affected and shaped Haderslev.

We pass distinctive historic buildings and Haderslev Cathedral, exploring traces of the town's changing Danish and German allegiances and rule. These stories offer an insight into life in the border region, where language, national identity and belonging have played an important role.

At the town's memorials, we hear about the wars and the fallen, Danish and German perspectives on the past, and the fighting in Haderslev when Germany invaded Denmark on April 9 1940. We also visit the memorial in Damparken to the victims of the Haderslev lake boat disaster.

The guided tour connects major historical events with local people's lives, offering a broad introduction to Haderslev's history. There is time for questions and conversation along the way.
