Seafaring, strong destinies and urban life in Svendborg

Svendborg is the pearl of South Funen, a vibrant harbour town which for centuries has stretched its "currents" out into the wider world and brought ideas home from distant shores.

On this guided walking tour, we delve into both the historic and the modern town, following the traces of seafaring, strong personalities and dramatic events that have shaped Svendborg as well as Denmark.

Along the way, you will encounter stories of pigs that helped build fortunes, merciful monks, courageous resistance fighters and committed communist dramatists who used the theatre to shake up contemporary society. We talk about the ragged proletariat as well as the powerful churches, and you will hear about the seafaring men who set out onto the open sea and the strong women who stayed behind and kept the town and families together.

We make our way from the harbour up into the town through atmospheric streets, passing the old warehouses along the famous quayside, from where ferries sail to the islands of the South Funen Archipelago: Drejø, Bjørnø, Skarø and Ærø. You will learn about the importance of shipping for Svendborg, about the shipyards and Frederiksøen, home to one of the world's leading repair yards for historic and preservation-worthy wooden vessels.

On our route, we visit "Mudderhullet" and the Træskibsbroen once the heart of Svendborg's medieval harbour, and every summer the gathering point for proud old ships taking part in "Fyn Rundt for Bevaringsværdige Træskibe". We also see the main square with the town's oldest preserved half-timbered house, Ane Hvides Gård, take in the sight of the "Gylletank", and step into the atmospheric Church of St Nicholas before continuing through the charming lanes that link the harbour with the town centre.

Throughout the walk, your guide weaves the local stories into the broader threads of Danish history and reveals how a "small" seafaring town like Svendborg has time and again left its mark far beyond South Funen.
