The Fortress Town of Fredericia

On a guided walk in Fredericia, you will experience the city's history. Hear the story of Fredericia's remarkable military and religious history from its founding as a fortified city in 1650 to the present day.

We meet at Fredericia's train or bus station, alternatively at Landsoldaten or the harbour, if you prefer.

These are the main highlights of our guided tour. The order depends on where we start.

From the Prince's Gate, the city's old main gate, we walk the grassy fortress ramparts from one bastion to another, while I give you the history of the ramparts and their significance from the 17th to the 21st century. I also talk about the Swedish invasion in the 1650s and the victory against the our German neighbour in 1849.

We stop at the iconic statue of the Brave Soldier, the first monument in the world erected in honor of the Private. Close by we find the White Water Tower, the city's beautiful characteristic water tower. If you want to go to the top of the tower we need an extra hour. From the top you'll find the most beautiful view over the old town and its special layout. Definitely worth a visit.

From the ramparts we visit the charming streets and cozy houses in the old town centre, where you will hear the story of the founding of Fredericia in 1650 during the reign og King Frederik III, which includes how it was laid out according to a strict city plan, which is still visible today. We pass many remarkable buildings such as the town hall and several churches.

Among the sights are especially Trinitatis Church and St. Michaelis Church, which used to be a garrison church in the 18th century. Along the way, I recount the city's religious privileges, where freedom for all Christian denominations and Jews were the guidelines and the special reasons behind them. From there we continue towards the Jewish cemetery.

In addition to the White Water Tower, the guided tour can also be extended with a visit to Fredericia City Museum, which exhibits Fredericia's urban history, and where you can experience typical original homes from the 17th and 18th centuries.
