The medieval town Copenhagen where bishop Absalon built his city

Let's meet at the Kings New Square, Kongens Nytorv, in central Copenhagen and you will get the knowledge of what we have learned in connection with the building of the metro.

You will be told where bishop Absalon lived before he moved to a new castle which was a gift from king Valdemar the Great. We walk through what used to be the old harbour area to see where the castle was situated, today Christiansborg Castle with the Danish Parliament.

We continue towards the Fountain square, Vandkunsten, which presumably was a market place during the middle ages. We head towards the Old Square, Gammel Torv, where the city council and later the town hall were situated, through the pedestrian street Strøget to Amager Square where the Dutch farmers sold their vegetables.

During the reign of King Valdemar Copenhagen becomes the most important city; in that aspect the growing population prompted more houses. There were many risks and the Black Death took many lives.

The Hanseatic merchants destroyed Absalon's castle.

In 1417 the city changes from being the bishop's town to the town of the kings, and the wars against the Hanseatic merchants have a great impact on the town.
