Vejle, Resilient Town. What Does it Mean, How Do You See it in Town
Vejle is one of only 100 resilient cities in the world. What do words such as the new sluice, resilient-cooperation, cloud burst street, Resilient street and Resilient house, mean? Learn on this guided walk in Vejle where I'll show you how it all forms Vejle.
Some other Resilient cities are Rome, Los Angeles, Durban and Wellington. As you see, Vejle is part of a prestigious network. Vejle was carefully chosen by the Rockefeller Foundation for its innovative approach to solutions for climate change and global warming, an issue Vejle does a lot to prevent. This will be obvious on this city walk, where we'll pass places that are part of these prevention efforts.

The tour focusing on food and the good stories is a guided bus tour starting in Vejle, from where we drive towards Jelling. We can of course start somewhere else according to your choice.
We visit a traditional old grocery store which is now also a museum. If you are into nostalgia, be sure to make a few purchases at the counter. It's hard not to.
We carry on to the beautiful Nørup Church, an old medieval church restored to its present day's unique look with a Russian style onion dome, which is very unusual for a Danish church.
From Nørup church we go to the UNESCO World Heritage site at Jelling. See the large runic stone where king Harald Bluetooth in the year 965 claimed that he made the Danes Christian. The runic stone is said to hold the birth certificate of Denmark as a nation.
We end our morning with a delicious Viking lunch in one of Jelling's nice cafes, known for its locally produced, high quality food and drink. We might be able to listen a story by the proprietor while having lunch.
After lunch you will have time to enjoy the historic experience centre Kongernes Jelling, Royal Jelling, before we head back to Vejle.

Vejle – a Thousand Years of History From the Middle Ages till Today
A guided walk through the old inner city of Vejle will give you a unique experience of the town's history from the first settlements in the early middle ages via a golden era and a blooming commercial life due to industrial gain in the 18th and 19th century and bringing you up to date with new and exciting architecture and a modern city centre.
In the centre of Vejle we will pass the old marketplace where the dominant building is the church Sct. Nicolai. Niccolaus is the saint for the seafarers. The church is the oldest in Vejle and hides secrets especially connected to the northern wall.
Through Foldegade, which in the old days was a small narrow street, where the cattle were fenced in, we walk down to Søndertorv one of the gates for entrance in the old days. I'll talk about the stream passing through Vejle, a stream which is a cornerstone in the history.
We will walk towards the town centre and we will see where trade was done by the big groceries and thereafter continue to the square in front of the old town hall, which was in old times a monastery.
Continuing our walk I shall explain about Orla Lehmann who's name is related to one of the small streets and we will see the sculptures created by Pontus Kjermann. You will hear about the great fire that almost destroyed Vejle.
Walking on we will meet the stream which now again runs through the city center, and through the old streets we will slowly turn back to where we started.
This tour can be prolonged with a walk down to the old railway station, the harbour and more.

Jelling - a guided tour
A guided tour in Jelling is a trip back in time and history. Jelling is home to the Jelling Stone, which is said to be Denmark's baptismal certificate and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, there are two runic stones that Harald Bluetooth raised to remember his parents King Gorm the Old and Queen Thyra. Here, Denmark is described for the first time as a unified country. Therefore, we consider the stones to be Denmark's baptismal certificate.
Right next to the runic stones is the museum Kongernes Jelling, Royal Jelling, a museum that is part of our National Museum. The museum has a very exciting and modern exhibition that tells history with interactive screens. In Jelling there is an obvious focus on Viking history. Go exploring – first on a guided tour, and then on your own in the museum.
Not far from Jelling you find Bindeballe Købmandsgård, an old grocery shop, the Bronze Age burial place of the Egtved girl, the Ravning bridge, Randbøldal which is a beautiful heath area and there are furthermore many stories of beautiful nature and the Ice Age in the Vejle river valley. You can spend a few or many hours - in either case it will be a pleasure to the eye and will entail entertaining stories.
Vejle guided tours

How about a guided city tour on the harbor front with the world-famous buildings Bølgen, the Wave, and Fjordenhus. It is modern architecture when it's most impressive and beautiful and to some a challenge to the eyes. Famous within Denmark and also beyond.
A guided tour in Vejle also offers the history of urban development, the Middle Ages or Vejle's status as a city of resilience. Resilience focuses on the power of water and how Vejle can handle the threat from the river and the danger of floodings. Resilience connects Vejle with cities such as Rome and Los Angeles.
If you prefer a more active tour, you can choose a tour by bike, by canoe on the river or kayak on the fiord. The nature around Vejle provides some of the most beautiful Danish nature sights and spots. The beech forest in Vejle is famous for having the first beech that pops in the spring.
