Interesting Monuments in Vejle
Vejle has a large number of historic monuments commemorating all sorts of events and people from wellknown local personalities to national war memorials and memorials for disasters.
This city walk gives you an opportunity to see some of the most fascinating monuments in Vejle. Amongst them are monuments from the Danish-Austrian-Prussian wars of 1848-50 and 1864. Vejle was occupied by Austrian and Prussian forces in both wars and one Austrian soldier is buried at a cemetery in Vejle as Vejle held a military hospital during the wars.
If you have a coach available we can also visit the war memorials and war graves of the Second World War 1939-45 at the Vejle Northern Cemetery, but it is too far away from the rest of the monuments to walk there. In case you have a particular interest in monuments from specific events or periods the tour will be accomodated to your wishes as far as possible.

Vejle's New Architecture and Outstanding Buildings
Vejle city council enacted an architectural policy as the first city council in Denmark. Come along on this city walk and experience the significance of this visionary policy.
Since 1997 Vejle's city council has had a clear attitude to the city's architecture, which has made a great impact on the buildings, the urban spaces and parks later built.
Experience the architecture and hear the stories about the city park, the music theatre, the art museum, the roundabout, the midpoint of Vejle and many more exciting new places such as the Wave and Fjordenhus. Naturally, I'll spice up the city walk by including the stories of the city's older buildings, which we pass on our walk through the city.
A city walk, which will be exciting for both new and old residents of Vejle and all with an interest in architecture and urban spaces.

Viking Kings and Danish World Heritage – Jelling
Guidet tour of the famous runic stones of Jelling – the Christian "birth certificate" of Denmark from the Viking age.
Right next to the church of the small Danish town of Jelling, you will find two runic stones; a small older one and a larger younger one dating back to around 950 AD, during the Viking age. They used to be placed on top of the two burial mounds which are in front of their present position.
Through many generations the runic stones have been seen as elements of Danish national identity as they, for the first time, mentioned Denmark as a nation ruled by kings and the runic inscription on the larger, younger stone also says that the Danes have become Christians during the reign of King Harald Bluetooth and on his command.
That is the reason for the larger runic stone's inscription being called the Christian birth certificate of Denmark showing also that Denmark is one of the oldest kingdoms in the world as it has been in existence ever since.
The runic stones of Jelling are so unique that they are one of only three sites in Denmark having been put on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
If the local museum of the Kings of Jelling is open, I'll end the tour so you can visit to the museum on your own. There you can see what the area looked like in Viking times and see the runic stones in their original colour sceme.

Historic walk in Vejle
Vejle in the south eastern Danish peninsula Jutland was founded in the Middle Ages as a port.
For many years Vejle was a very small place with only a few hundred inhabitants. Slowly Vejle developed into a town of trade being strategically well positioned by the sea and surrounded by streams on which boats could take cargo from the inner parts of Southern Jutland to the port of Vejle and from Vejle's port it could be shipped out to the rest of the world.
Vejle was occupied by Austrian and Prussian forces during both of the wars of Sleswig 1848-50 and 1864. Wars with a significance for the Danish perception of being a Dane and the shaping of Denmark in those years but most likely these two wars mean nothing to you or your country. In the later part of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century, Vejle became a well known industrial town especially known for its iron foundry and its woollen mill, at both of which a large part of Vejle's work force was employed.
Today Vejle is famous for its modern architecture at the old port area and for being a town always at the forefront of development in any field.
Let me guide you through Vejle's history and the vibrant town Vejle is today – I love my town.

A Hike in Syvårssøerne -The Seven Year Lakes – at Frederikshåb Plantation
Syvårssøerne, the Seven Year Lakes, at Frederikshåb Plantation is at moment one of Denmark's biggest natural attractions, as the water level in the mystical "Syvårssøerne" is very high, and numerous paths in the area are flooded. A hike here is an exciting experience.
I myself is very enthusiastic about this hike, where we walk around the big sand dunes in Randbøl moor. Here we will pass over the 17m high Stoltenberg. A sand dune shaped by the wind collecting sand on the otherwise flat and heather clad moorland. It is difficult here to believe that you are not in the big seaside dunes at the west coast by the North Sea.
The tour continues in Frederikshåb Plantation where we hike along the lakes Syvårssøerne. The "Seven Year Lakes" are not always here which is the mystical part as the lakes emerges and disappears in fluctuation with the groundwater level. For centuries it was noticed that they appeared around every seven years. The hike at Syvårssøerne is a hike you can do again and again every season of the year. No matter when you pass by, the nature is always beautiful – even in rain and clouded weather. If you bring kids along, the tour offers possibility for play time in the great sand dunes.
Besides the mystical and very beautiful nature, we will also encounter multiple historical sites from WW2 when Denmark was occupied by German forces and the German occupational forces used the area as a secret airfield. In the area there are among other things an airplane hiding spot, field kitchen, personal bunker fuel lines and a bunker for fuel.
A guided hike which is very exciting for kids as well as adults. -

Jelling - a guided tour
A guided tour in Jelling is a trip back in time and history. Jelling is home to the Jelling Stone, which is said to be Denmark's baptismal certificate and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, there are two runic stones that Harald Bluetooth raised to remember his parents King Gorm the Old and Queen Thyra. Here, Denmark is described for the first time as a unified country. Therefore, we consider the stones to be Denmark's baptismal certificate.
Right next to the runic stones is the museum Kongernes Jelling, Royal Jelling, a museum that is part of our National Museum. The museum has a very exciting and modern exhibition that tells history with interactive screens. In Jelling there is an obvious focus on Viking history. Go exploring – first on a guided tour, and then on your own in the museum.
Not far from Jelling you find Bindeballe Købmandsgård, an old grocery shop, the Bronze Age burial place of the Egtved girl, the Ravning bridge, Randbøldal which is a beautiful heath area and there are furthermore many stories of beautiful nature and the Ice Age in the Vejle river valley. You can spend a few or many hours - in either case it will be a pleasure to the eye and will entail entertaining stories.
